The first smile, was it in the eyes of the fish
As it roamed ocean delights?
Or in the flap of wings
As a bird flew the heights?
Maybe it was in the lion’s roar
As he felt his muscled bodies power
Or a dog’s tongue licking her pups for
Pleasure at their safe emergence,
Maybe it was on a baby’s face
Or the new parents proud look?
For, one day, eons ago somewhere in this place
a smile changed the world;
And then a smile was sheathed
As we wounded joy.
